theoutnet.com social media fail

Cult fashion site The Outnet.com has learnt the very valuable lesson of how important reputation management is. Their highly publicised and marketed 1 pound sale generated a huge amount of interest and buzz prior to its 15 April launch. The sentiment however changed once its members were unable to even get onto the site with many customers complaining that the sale was a “con” and only to boost database numbers.
The Outnet.com social media
Will theoutnet.com be able to win back their customers and repair the damage done with so many unimpressed and vocal facebook and twitter fans? Well, that’s what we call “reputation management 101″

What are your thoughts? Is it worth running a campaign that could potentially damage your reputation on Social Networks such as Facebook and Twitter ?

Hidden Pizza with extra cheese…

by admin on April 15, 2010

All of Melbourne was a buzz with excitement that something uniquely Melbourne was revealed early this week. At first glance it seemed like an awesome concept, but upn perusing the finer details (ie: having a Melbourne hipster photographer at the opening) the smell of freshly prepared pizza started to smell a little off…

The “Hidden pizza” concept was aggressively “marketed” via facebook and other digital media and although appearing as organic, its fan number and buzz was in the thousands for just a single night of serving pizza from a hidden location.

And so it was revealed that ” Hidden Pizza” is a marketing campaign and although it seems effortlessly cool chic and underground with its Aesop Soap, urban garden and eco furniture,it is actually (and not surprisingly) a carefully executed partnership that’s rumoured to involve Yellow pages and Clemenger.

Interestingly enough the Hidden Pizza Facebook page dosent allow fans to post on its wall so fans are unable to dicuss the fact that the conecpt is a marketing campaign…

Apple Ipad delayed.. again..

by admin on April 14, 2010

According to Apple, the Australian launch of the ipad has been delayed due to high demand in the US. Ipad stocks originally allocated for Australian shores are being sold in the US to cover demand and to reduce the number of “resellers” selling the ipad at inflated prices.

Apple has confirmed that orders will be taken from May 10 for Australian customers.

Promoted Tweets are now live

by admin on April 13, 2010

Promoted Tweets are now live. Yet, it remains to be seen how this will play out in reality. Will twitter ever be the same? Will we be bombarded with sales messages? Well, that depends on the advertisers and how Twitter manages the delivery.

In terms of advertisers Twitter has handpicked a few promotional partners for the launch including Virgin America so for now the brands are likeable and savvy, once the flood gates are open the meaningful-ness of the message may be lost to online gambling, male enhancement and fat loss techniques.

Virgin Americas first promoted tweet under the hash tag #VXREDHOT promoted a 50% off offer for the first 500 twitter followers to participate. The promotion was a success and sold out within hours.

Plenty, so it seems…. Meet Mr Shuffles, the Elephant Calf born at Taronga Zoo in Sydney… Just don’t call him a calf, because he doesn’t like it… Mr Shuffles attracted a huge amount of attention days before he was born. You see the problem was that he had moved into an unusual position and the zookeepers announced that the calf (sorry Mr Shuffles) would be still born.

The rest is history, Mr Shuffles defied the odds and has gone on to become a (Social Media) Superstar! The Facebook fan page created on the 11/3 by a Mr Shuffles fan has generated over 1300 fans in 5 days… pretty impressive, Mr Shuffles also manages to find the time to Tweet, when not splashing around in his pond, which also happens to be a massive YouTube hit…

So what is it that makes the baby elephant so successful in the social media space?

Well, its of course the UVP, his story…So what’s your brands UVP?

You can Follow Mr Shuffles on Twitter and Facebook and probably catch him presenting at next years SXSW….

Chatroulette “exposed”

by admin on March 5, 2010

2010’s new kid on the Social Media block, Chatroulette has been “exposed” on the Daily Show hosted by Jon Stewart and as a result, some are saying that the short lived, not for everyone and certainly not safe a for work network will become full of media and brands tying to dig dirt and sell products.

We blogged about Chatroulette back in February read it here

The site has recently come under fire although its intention in the beginning is very different to the current male dominated participants. Created in Brooklyn by 20 somethings in front of their computers, Chatroulette was a great way to connect with other “creative” types. Momentum quickly gained and Chatroulette exploded in early 2010.]

Check out Chatroulette here.
